Conor McGregor applauds Amir Khan for stepping up in weight despite the result

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has stated numerous times in the past that he believes more fighters should be willing to move up to different weight classes to showcase their talent, and that's why he appreciated Amir Khan taking a chance to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Khan moved up two divisions for his fight against Alvarez to take a run at his middleweight title, but his night ended in dramatic fashion courtesy of a vicious sixth-round knockout.

Despite that setback in the ring, McGregor applauded Khan for even taking the fight because it's something he believes most boxers wouldn't even be willing to try.

McGregor is no stranger to taking these same kinds of challenges with his own career.

Following his win over former featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 194 last December, McGregor then was matched up with lightweight king Rafael dos Anjos.

When dos Anjos fell off the card due to injury, McGregor ended up bumping to welterweight for a fight against Nate Diaz.

McGregor ended up losing that fight by second-round rear naked choke, but it didn't stop him from asking for an immediate rematch with Diaz with that bout also taking place at 170 pounds.

McGregor clearly has no problem moving up several divisions to accept whatever challenge is thrown his way, and he's supporting other combat sports athletes who are doing the same.

Sensex rises 460 points as banks gain amid Asia rally

India’s benchmark stock index posted its biggest jump in a month amid optimism over the progress of economic bills in parliament and as global equities climbed on speculation the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates gradually.

Bajaj Auto Ltd and Hero MotoCorp Ltd, the biggest two-wheeler makers, were among the biggest gainers on the S&P BSE Sensex. ICICI Bank Ltd and Axis Bank Ltd rose at least 3%. Housing Development Finance Corp. Ltd, India’s largest mortgage lender, rallied to a four-month high. NTPC Ltd, the largest power utility, jumped the most in a month.

The Sensex increased 1.82%, or 460.36 points, to 25,688.86 at the close, the best performance in Asia. Productivity of both houses of Parliament has been the highest in a year, according to data from PRS Legislative Research. The lower house last week approved a bill that looks to overhaul century-old bankruptcy laws and make it easier to wind up a dying company or recover dues from a defaulter.

The Nifty 50 closed 1.71%, or 132.60 points, higher at 7,866.05.

“Interest-rate sensitives are rallying on expectation that the bankruptcy bill will be passed as a money bill in parliament, which will enable banks to reduce bad debts,” A.K. Prabhakar, the head of research at IDBI Capital Capital Market Services Ltd, said by phone from Mumbai. “Also, company earnings are showing a marked improvement in net interest margins across the board.”

Earnings in the world’s fastest-growing major economy seem to be recovering after the worst run since the global financial crisis. Seven out of 12 Sensex firms that have posted March quarter results so far beat or matched estimates.

Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), the biggest home-products company, reported a quarterly profit of Rs.1,090 crore, higher than the Rs.1,030 crore estimate of 22 analysts in a Bloomberg News survey. Still, the stock declined 0.9% after the company’s sales of Rs.7,810 crore rupees, less than the Rs.7,990 crore rupee estimate.

European and Asian stocks rose after disappointing US payrolls data added fuel to the argument against a Federal Reserve interest rate increase in June.

“The US non-farm payrolls data suggest that the Fed is unlikely to raise rates anytime soon,” Abhimanyu Sofat, founder at AdviseSure Ventures Pvt. Ltd in Mumbai, said by phone. “The earnings season has been better than expected and a good monsoon can trigger further rate cuts in India.”

The Sensex has lost 1.6% this year and trades at 15.9 times 12-month projected earnings versus 11.3 for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. Foreign investors sold $49.3 million of local stocks on May 5, paring this year’s inflows to $1.7 billion. They invested $585 million last month after an inflow of $4.1 billion in March, which was the highest in three years.

Kim Jong Un Crowned As Party Leader At North Korean Congress

North Korean strongman Kim Jong-Un was named chairman of the ruling Workers' Party today at a once in a generation congress seen as a coronation for the young leader.

Thousands of delegates, many in uniform, clapped and cheered enthusiastically as the country's official head of state, Kim Yong-Nam, announced the post at the first top-level meeting of the party for 36 years.

The speech was the first time foreign journalists allowed into the reclusive country to cover the congress have got a glimpse of the delegate hall, festooned in red and gold banners carrying the party's logo.

Kim departed from his usual black outfit as he appeared on stage, sporting a tailored Western suit and grey tie along with large, trendy glasses.

The congress, which opened on Friday, has given 33-year-old Kim a podium to secure his status as supreme leader and confirm his legacy "byungjin" doctrine of twin economic and nuclear development.

North Korea has carried out two of its four nuclear tests under Kim's leadership, most recently in January when it claimed to have tried out a powerful hydrogen bomb -- a claim experts have disputed.

There has been growing concern that Pyongyang may be on the verge of conducting a fifth test, with satellite imagery showing activity at the North's Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

Delegates to what is technically North Korea's top decision-making body on Sunday adopted his motion to "boost self-defensive nuclear force, both in quality and quantity".

The meeting also enshrined a policy of not using nuclear weapons unless the country's sovereignty is threatened by another nuclear power, and of working towards the reunification of the divided Korean peninsula.

"But if the South Korean authorities opt for a war... we will turn out in the just war to mercilessly wipe out the anti-reunification forces," said a document published by the North's official KCNA news agency.

Reiterating the North's long-held argument that its push for a nuclear deterrent was forced by US hostility, the congress said the nuclear weapons programme would move forward "as long as the imperialists persist in their nuclear threat".

Presenting his report to the congress in a marathon three-hour speech on Saturday, Kim said Pyongyang wanted better relations with previously "hostile" nations and proposed military talks with South Korea to ease tensions on their heavily fortified border.

'Propaganda with no sincerity'

The government in Seoul dismissed his remarks, including a vow to pursue global denuclearisation, as meaningless propaganda.

"There is absolutely no sincerity in talking about the necessity of military talks... while calling oneself a nuclear weapons state and launching nuclear and missile provocations," defence ministry spokesman Moon Sang-Gyun said.

Moon said the party congress had only served to reaffirm North Korea's intention to develop its nuclear arsenal, and added that Seoul would continue to counter those ambitions with sanctions and pressure.

The South Korean Unification Ministry was equally dismissive, describing Kim's remarks on improving North-South ties as a "propaganda act with no sincerity."

Kim was not even born when the last party congress was held in 1980 to crown his father, Kim Jong-Il, as the heir apparent to founding leader Kim Il-Sung.

When his own turn came, following the death of Kim Jong-Il in December 2011, the new young leader quickly set about cementing his power base and securing his legitimacy as the inheritor of Kim family's ruling dynasty.

One of his earliest moves was to adjust his father's "songun", or military first policy, to the "byungjin" policy of economic-nuclear development.

The nuclear half of that strategy had dominated the run-up to the party congress, starting with a fourth nuclear test in January that was followed by a long-range rocket launch and a flurry of other missile and weapons tests.

Some observers had predicted that the congress might switch the focus to the economic side of the equation, and Kim did unveil a five-year economic plan -- the first of its kind for decades.

But his report to the congress offered few details of the plan's policies or targets beyond general ambitions to boost production across all economic sectors, with a particular focus on energy production.

Google now shows Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh as integral part of India, not as disputed territory

Search engine giant Google seems to be intimidated by the new circular issued by Narendra Modi government warning penal action against any organization which disseminates an Indian map, which is contrary to the one officially circulated by the Union. For years, Google Maps used to highlight the territories of Jammu & Kashmir, along with Arunachal Pradesh in dotted lines, in order to signify that the region is disputed. (ALSO READ: Wrong depiction of India map can land you in jail, 100 cr fine)

However, Google has now altered its maps. No longer is the region of Kashmir and Arunachal shown as a territory of conflict. The new maps do not highlight the area with dotted lines. Instead, both the states are shown intact within the official territory of India. The change comes barely a couple of days after government decided to impose a fine of USD 15 million, or Rs 100 crore on any individual, organization or media platform disseminating the Indian map, which is not in line with the official version released by Government of India (GoI). Apart from the fine, the violator would also be sentenced up to seven years of jail.

The draft of ‘The Geospatial Information Regulation Bill 2016′ is about to be tabled in the Parliament. As per the legislation, it would be compulsory to take the approval of government to publish and disseminate any geospatial information.

“No person shall depict, disseminate, publish or distribute any wrong or false topographic information of India including international boundaries through internet platforms or online services or in any electronic or physical form,” the draft bill states.

Geospatial information refers to the data which has been captured through aerial instruments such as satellites, airships and unmanned aerial drones. It is used to prepare topographical maps. Source: http://www.india.com

Narendra Modi’s degree: Arvind Kejriwal lays a trap, BJP walks into it

It’s rather embarrassing that our leaders would be discussing whether the educational degrees of the country’s Prime Minister are fakes. When Arvind Kejriwal made the allegation, it was expected that the BJP would laugh it off, calling it a frivolous piece of fiction concocted by a leader who has nothing worthwhile to do and is desperate for some cheap publicity. Now that no less than the party president Amit Shah and senior leader Arun Jaitley have come out with a defence for the prime minister, the matter appears to be serious.

Let’s not get into a debate over whether the documents produced by both sides are genuine. As is usual in such cases, it would lead us nowhere. The truth would finally get buried in the din of claims and counterclaims. The issue would die down after running its course. The AAP points out to several discrepancies in the BA degree of Modi. When the mark-sheet shows the year 1977, how can the degree issued mention it as 1978? How come, it alleges, the names are different in the mark-sheet and the degree certificate? No Narendra Damodar Modi passed out from Delhi University in 1978, the party claims, adding that the only Narendra Modi to graduate in the year from the varsity was Narendra Mahavir Modi, a resident of Rajasthan.
Arvind Kejriwal and Narendra Modi

Arvind Kejriwal and Narendra Modi

The BJP, on its part, has produced the BA and MA certificates of the Prime Minister and claims them to be genuine. We don’t have clear answers from the party on the discrepancies pointed out by AAP leaders, but they are expected to brush these off as clerical errors. The party would like others to believe that the allegations are pure fiction with no basis in reality. But why did it need to get into this in the first place?
Nobody was discussing the degree issue with any seriousness, but after the BJP’s media conference it has assumed some gravitas. It’s possible the AAP will dig out some more documents in the coming days and keep the BJP leaders on their toes. Television debates will only add to the party’s discomfiture. It could have done without the unnecessary attention but given the party’s natural inclination to give it back, its response is not unexpected.
Shah said AAP has taken the public discourse to a new low. He could be right, but the BJP has not exactly been the standard-bearer among political parties in this respect either. But such allegations don’t seem to bother the AAP. The fact that it managed to engage the BJP on the matter is good enough. Actually, it’s playing the BJP’s game when it comes to staying in news and putting the opposition in a situation of discomfiture. In a way what the BJP is doing to the Congress, the AAP is doing to the BJP.

It’s pointless to be judgmental over a certificate or two. It won’t diminish Narendra Modi. Political parties play their little games. The media is their new battle field. Here no low is low enough. Source: http://www.firstpost.com

Sadiq Khan sworn in, promises a ‘better’ London

Newly elected London Mayor’s opening words at his swearing-in ceremony – “Good Morning, I’m Sadiq Khan, and I’m the Mayor of London” – were drowned in claps and whistles by the audience at the Southwark Cathedral in London.

The 44-year old human rights lawyer of Pakistani descent is not only the first Muslim head of London, but set a record by winning 1.1 million votes. His lead over his closest rival was bigger than that achieved by both his predecessors Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone. With a 45 per cent election turnout, he finished with a margin of 13.6 percentage points over Zac Goldsmith of the Conservative Party.

Warmly acknowledging the introduction made by Doreen Lawrence, the mother of the British teenager Stephen Lawrence who was killed in a racist attack in London in 1993, Mr. Khan promised to “lead the most transparent, engaged and representative council London has ever seen”.

He harked back to his humble beginnings – “So you better know this but I grew up in a council estate,” – and said he achieved what he never dreamt of because of the opportunities and “helping hand” the city offered him and his family. Promising a “better” London, he pledged to give all Londoners the opportunities that he was offered.

Smear campaign

Mr. Khan led an energetic campaign that was turned increasingly toxic by the personal attacks and slander levelled against him by his opponent, the billionaire Mr. Goldsmith, including the smear that he shared platforms with extremists in the past.

Mr. Goldsmith’s campaign, which started with a focus on green and sustainable solutions to city issues, rapidly descended into racism and divisiveness. His piece in the Daily Mail four days before the elections made the schism between him and his opponent unbreachable. He warned that with a Labour victory “we will have handed control of the Met, and with it control over national counter-terrorism policy, to a party whose candidate and current leadership have, whether intentionally or not, repeatedly legitimised those with extremist views.”

There was mounting criticism even within the Conservative Party to Mr. Goldsmith’s campaign. Andrew Boff, a former Conservative member of the London Assembly, told Newsnight that Mr. Goldsmith’s tactic of painting religious conservatives as “extremists” had alienated the party from the city’s ethnic minority voters.

Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn’s absence at Mr. Khan’s swearing-in has led to speculation of an increasingly frosty relationship between the two.

Mr. Khan, a practising Muslim, is a liberal who received death threats from extremists for his support for the legalisation of gay marriage in 2013.

Haqqani network’s chief made deputy leader of Taliban to protect him from US, says report

Pakistan’s powerful ISI had brought in Haqqani network’s chief Sirajuddin Haqqani as the deputy leader of the Taliban last year to protect him from the Americans, a media report said on Sunday.
The New York Times, quoting Afghan and American officials, said in a report that the “closer integration of
the feared” Haqqani militant network into the leadership of the Taliban is “changing the flow of the Afghan insurgency this year, with the Haqqanis’ senior leader increasingly calling the shots in the Taliban’s offensive.
It quoted Afghanistan’s former intelligence chief Rahmatullah Nabil as saying that “the ISI brought Sirajuddin as the deputy to the Taliban to give him protection, so if the peace talks get serious, the Americans wouldn’t be able to say, ‘We will make peace with the leader but not with the deputy’.”
Nabil, who now runs a charity for wounded Afghan soldiers, said the merger had been helped by the fact that the
Haqqanis were struggling financially, after their chief fund-raiser was gunned down near Islamabad in 2013, and that the Taliban needed Haqqani’s expertise in waging complex attacks.

Pak arrests top Taliban commander Nasiruddin Haqqani
US,Afghan negotiating peace deal with Haqqanis: Report
Brigadier General Charles Cleveland, the chief spokesman for United States and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said that “Sirajuddin increasingly runs the day-to-day military operations for the Taliban, and, we believe, is likely
involved in appointing shadow governors.”
“The Haqqani network’s closer integration with the Taliban command also creates awkwardness for the Obama
administration, and is raising tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” it said.
The report cited some senior Afghan officials as saying that the Pakistani military was “central” to bringing the Haqqanis more closely into the Taliban during the insurgency’s leadership councils in 2015 summer, which were held in Quetta.
The report said that the Haqqanis have “refined a signature brand” of urban terrorist attacks and cultivated a sophisticated international fund-raising network, factoring prominently in the United States military’s push to keep troops in Afghanistan.
It added that the group’s growing role in leading the entire insurgency in the war-torn country has raised concerns about an even deadlier year of fighting ahead, as hopes of peace talks have collapsed.
“The shift is also raising tensions with the Pakistani military, which American and Afghan officials accuse of sheltering the Haqqanis as a proxy group,” it said.
While the Haqqani network has always nominally been a branch of the Taliban, the report said the selection of
Sirajuddin Haqqani to become the deputy leader of the Taliban during a leadership struggle in summer 2015 has turned out to be far from a “symbolic move” with Haqqani bringing to the Taliban a “more applied and lethal military expertise” than the supreme leader of the group, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour.
“Mullah Mansour has been consumed with a campaign to quell dissent against his leadership, and he is said to have limited his movements and access since a reported attack on his life in Quetta, Pakistan. Accordingly, Haqqani has stepped in, at times even running meetings of the Taliban leadership council,” the report said citing senior Afghan security officials.
A senior Taliban commander in southern Afghanistan said Haqqani had been in “constant contact” with Taliban field
commanders in the south and the north of the country, in addition to his stronghold in the southeast.
Mawlawi Sardar Zadran, a former Haqqani commander in eastern Afghanistan, said Haqqani had a central role in
appointing Taliban governors.
“No one can be appointed without his advice,” he said. “The influence of Sirajuddin in the Taliban ranks seems to be just growing.”
The report quoted a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, as confirming Haqqani’s elevated role, saying it was
because of “his bravery”.
“We can say that not only his military obligations but all his obligations have increased,” Mujahid said.
The State Department had officially listed the Haqqanis as a terrorist group in 2012, and there is a USD 5 million
American bounty on Sirajuddin Haqqani.
The report added that the Afghan Taliban, as a group, have remained off that terrorist list, “partly to ease the prospect of starting peace talks between them and the Afghan government — a process that American officials have been centrally involved in.
“With the clear and public integration of the Haqqanis into the Taliban leadership over at least the past year, American officials have essentially been unable to dodge the claim that they are trying to broker talks with terrorists,” it said.

Pakistani Rights Activist Khurram Zaki Shot Dead In Karachi

Prominent Pakistani rights activist Khurram Zaki was shot dead while having dinner with a friend at a restaurant here, and his NGO blamed "Takfiri Deobandi militants" for the killing.

Zaki, 40, was with his journalist friend Rao Khalid when two attackers arrived on a motorcycle, sprayed bullets at them and sped away, the media quoted police as saying.

Rao Khalid and a bystander were critically wounded in the attack.

The News International said Zaki suffered multiple bullet wounds. The attackers used a 9mm pistol. Ten spent bullet shells were found from the scene of the crime.

A former journalist, Zaki was an active campaigner for human rights and edited the website and Facebook page "Let Us Build Pakistan (LUBP)", which claimed to "spread liberal religious views".

LUBP Editor in Chief Ali Abbas Taj offered condolences "to Pakistani nation on the martyrdom of Zaki" and said he was second from the editorial team of LUBP to be killed by Deobandi militants.

"For the last one year, Zaki was a target of a systematic hate campaign by Deobandi fanatic Shamsuddin Amjad of the Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in collaboration with the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP)."

Taj said "hateful and violence inciting posters" against Zaki had been published recently by the Facebook page run by the pro-Taliban fanatics of Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to his Twitter profile, Zaki was the former head of current affairs for TV Channel News One, where he looked after infotainment and religious programming.

Zaki's website Lubpak.com is currently blocked in Pakistan, Dawn News reported today.

Zaki was last in the media limelight alongside activist Jibran Nasir in a campaign against Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz for inciting hatred against Shia Muslims.

The campaigners had managed to get a case registered against Aziz.

Rights activist Sabeen Mahmud, who was also gunned down in Karachi, had also taken part in the protest against Lal Masjid.

According to social media, Zaki was also a research scholar, blogger as well as human rights activist.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) condemned the killing and demanded the immediate arrest of the murderers.

"Zaki's murder is condemnable. Incidents of targeted killing are occurring in spite of on-going operations in the city," the MQM said.

LUBP described Zaki as a staunch critic of the systematic attacks on Shia Muslims, Sunni Sufis Muslims, Christians and other communities in Pakistan at the hands of Deobandi militants.

"In boldly highlighting and supporting the rights of Sunni Barelvis, Shias, Sufis, Ahmadis, Hindus and Christians, his contribution as citizen journalism was much bigger than all journalists combined in Pakistan.

"His death is the grim reminder that whoever raises voice against Taliban and Jamaat-e-Islami Deobandi mafia in Pakistan will not be spared. And when they have to murder, they never fail."

Google Maps May Need a License, IRCTC Data Leak, and More News This Week

It's been an interesting week in tech news, with both scientific development and consumer tech ticking along nicely.

There have been some major developments from India, but one of the most important bits of news that we came across was that the government might be working on a law that could would make it mandatory for Google Maps to get a license in India. According to a draft bill, the Ministry of Home Affairs is planning a law where you need a government license to acquire and to disseminate map data; and there are huge fines if this is not the case. There are also huge fines for "incorrect" depictions of India's borders. While the idea of a law around geospatial information makes sense, the specifics of the draft could be worrying.

The next piece of news from India is also really big - the Mumbai police warned that data had been hacked from the rail ticket booking site IRCTC, which is the biggest e-commerce destination in the country. It later turned out that this was not the case, but there was still serious cause for concern as officials admitted customer data might have been sold, and an enquiry is being conducted. IRCTC has three crore active and registered users, so the information of these users and their cards could be at risk, though officials assured all sensitive information is encrypted before it's stored.

Another huge piece of news for Indian tech enthusiasts was the announcement of carrier billing for Google Play, launched on Idea. This allows people to pay for apps without a credit or debit card - instead, the money is deducted from your prepaid balance, or added to your postpaid bill. Gadgets 360 first reported this on Tuesday, but one development we learned on Thursday was that Idea is charging a convenience fee for all transactions. This could be a spanner in the works - if it's cheaper to use a debit card, and people are anyway not used to paying for apps, then this mode of payment might not catch on. Idea did not respond to a request for comment on the issue.

Continuing the theme of big stories, Reliance Jio has started to roll out its 4G services to the public. It's not the open market yet, but the company has launched an employee referral program through which Jio employees can invite up to 10 people to join the network. These users will get 10GB free voice and data for three months, and also get access to "premium applications" for live TV, video on demand, news, and cloud storage.

Possibly the most exciting tech news right now is that SpaceX successfully landed its Falcon 9 rocket on a floating platform early on Friday. The rocket went into space, came down from a height of around 25,000 miles, and then landed on a floating platform. It's an incredible achievement with far reaching possibilities, though of course, that's all going to be off in the future.

In Brazil, there were some developments around the use of WhatsApp. On Tuesday, a judge ordered carriers to block WhatsApp for 72 hours, a move that affected 100 million users. This was struck down the next day by another judge, but it shows how vulnerable the services that we all rely on actually are.

Meanwhile, one of the more humorous developments took place recently, when the Los Angeles Police Department revealed that it cracked an iPhone 5s, at the same time the FBI was struggling with an iPhone 5c. Apple can't be happy about this news, but it's probably even more upset by the fact that a Chinese court rejected its trademark over the iPhone name. The court declared that a leathermaker can use the iPhone name for its handbags and phone cases. Meanwhile, long-time HTC fans might be saddened (if unsurprised) as the company continues to struggle. The company has seen dismal sales of its new flagship in China, and it's very promising VR division just become a new company.

Canada wildfire: Images show Fort McMurray devastation

Pictures obtained by the BBC show large parts of the Canadian city of Fort McMurray in ruins following a devastating wildfire.
The exact scale of the damage is difficult to assess, as access to the city is restricted.
Officials have given few details other than to report that 1,600 homes and other buildings have been destroyed.
However, people who have seen the damage say whole neighbourhoods have been wiped out.
One picture shows the ruins of many houses, with a car untouched by fire. In another, a destroyed church is surrounded by rubble.
Some parts of the city, in the province of Alberta, have been defended resolutely and are still standing.
The city's airport suffered only minor damage despite being licked by flame and engulfed by smoke.
Only the "Herculean" efforts of fire fighters saved the facility, says Scott Long of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.
  • 'It doesn't seem real': The residents who fled their homes
  • How 'perfect storm' boosted Alberta fire
  • The images of whole neighbourhoods in ruins are shocking but they will not surprise the people of Fort McMurray who fled knowing that their city was in danger of being consumed by fire.
The fire in the province of Alberta covers 850 sq km (328.2 sq miles), and the entire city of almost 90,000 people was evacuated three days ago.
Most fled south but some of those who headed north have been airlifted to safety.
A police-escorted convoy of 1,500 vehicles was passing through the city along the only safe route to Edmonton and Calgary to the south, but police have told the BBC it has has been suspended because of flames up to 200 feet high on both sides of the road.
It will take approximately four days for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to escort all evacuees from sites north of Fort McMurray, authorities said.
For nearby communities though the danger has not receded.
Officials are predicting that it will be "weeks and weeks" before the fire is completely out. The region has not had significant rain in two months.
The skies above the empty and smouldering city are full of strange shapes.
There are clouds that billow like bright white cauliflowers, boiling rapidly as they change by the second.
There are clouds illuminated by vertical streaks of a dull red from the fires on the ground.
And there are giant clouds stretching as far as the eye can take in with a single glance, great walls of smoke blown sideways by the strong winds.
The helicopters - almost 150 of them, we are told - look puny in the face of such a dramatic display of nature's power, but occasionally they do seem to be making progress in slowing the fire's march across the plains.
Ultimately though, says Bill Stewart, co-director of the University of California's Center for Fire Research and Outreach, only nature can stop it entirely. Source: BBC News

Elections: Labour's Sadiq Khan promises a 'better' London

Labour's Sadiq Khan has vowed to do all in his power to make London "better", as he was sworn in as the new mayor.
Referring to his council estate roots, Mr Khan, the city's first Muslim mayor, said he wanted all Londoners to have the same opportunities he has had.
It comes as Defence Secretary Michael Fallon defended Conservative Zac Goldsmith's campaign, describing it as the "rough and tumble" of politics.
The much-criticised campaign questioned Mr Khan's alleged links to extremists.
Mr Khan beat Mr Goldsmith, by 1,310,143 votes to 994,614, giving him a larger personal mandate than either of his predecessors, Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone.
He has announced he will step down as MP for Tooting, meaning a by-election will be held to elect a new representative in Parliament.
The former Labour minister's victory in London ends eight years of Conservative control of City Hall.
It has also given a boost to Labour after its poor performance in Scotland's election which saw it slump to third place behind the Conservatives.
Following on from its London success, Labour has also won Bristol's mayoral contest, with candidate Marvin Rees beating the incumbent, independent George Ferguson, by a comfortable margin.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed Mr Rees' victory, saying in a tweet: "Another Labour mayor who will stand up for their city!"
But Mr Corbyn was absent from Mr Khan's swearing-in ceremony earlier on Saturday.
Mr Khan - who nominated but did not vote for Mr Corbyn in the Labour leadership contest - said he was "not sure" why, adding: "We'll have to find out what he was doing."

More than 300 million Indians suffer from a crippling drought

In the blistering sun and swirling dust, farmer Dhananjay Hanumant Suryavanshi squats on his empty land and caresses the parched earth.

“There is only one thought that runs over and over again in my head. Will there be good rain this year? Will there be good rain this year?” Suryavanshi, 25, said.

Four years of drought here and crop loss have forced his family to take two loans and sell a third of his land, and driven him to do menial labor. In January, his mother gave up. She drank a bottle of pesticide and fell dead near the holy basil plant in the courtyard.

Relentless drought coupled with a record-breaking heat wave and bad farming practices in the western state of Maharashtra have slashed farm output and driven farmers to desperation.

This year is the worst in decades, officials say, because most farmers are also burdened by years of accumulated debt as they continue to deplete the precious groundwater.

About 330 million Indians are struggling under grueling heat and drought conditions across 10 states this year, the government said, severely harming the economy of a nation where nearly half the people rely on farming.

Reservoirs and rivers here in Maharashtra’s drought districts are almost dry, and a 50-car train now delivers water to Latur city, near Suryavanshi’s village. Thirsty Indians place long, serpentine lines of plastic pots and drums at the municipal water tank and village wells, and fights have broken out at water pumps.

In many places, children have turned into porters for their families, running up and down with water pots all day. A 12-year-old girl collapsed and died last month here in the searing 111-degree heat after she made five trips to fetch water.

“My whole family is in a constant state of panic over water,” said Kasi Mali, as she placed her pots in a long line. “I have missed many hours of my work as a laborer because I stand here.”

Nearly 30 percent of Indians in cities and 70 percent in villages rely on water pumped from deep underground, because the tap water supply is either insufficient or non-existent.

Only 17 percent of India’s farms have access to surface irrigation projects. Most farmers rely on the elusive annual rain or pump water from underground.

The practice has depleted the country’s groundwater supply precipitously, alarming environmentalists and raising concerns about India’s future agricultural output. Water levels have declined in 47 percent of India’s village wells over the past decade, the government said.

In Latur city, there is no groundwater even 700 feet down, residents say. In the villages nearby, the water table is in far worse shape, in some places dropping to 1,000 feet below the surface.

Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that the water table will disappear soon if India’s water usage is not regulated.

“We have gone on digging so aggressively in the last 10 years to draw water for our crops that we have used up the groundwater that is meant for the next two generations,” said Raju Dongare, a farmer. “But what else could we depend on? There were no canals or pipes coming to our farms.”

Experts also say that the drought is not a natural disaster but a consequence of decades of bad farming practices.

In recent years, the state government allowed the proliferation of sugar factories owned by local politicians, which led to a sort of gold rush among farmers here to cultivate water-guzzling sugar cane, said Pradeep Purandare, former professor of water studies at the Water and Land Management Institute.

Seventy percent of the water from the state’s dams goes to cane farms. But cane growers have drawn on groundwater, further sapping the aquifers.

This year, somewhat belatedly, the administration in Latur district launched a drive to encourage farmers to shift away from cane to oil seeds, lentils and soybeans.

“There is a mind-set among farmers that only sugar cane crop fetches good returns,” Pandurang Pole, the chief district official, said.

Latur district’s groundwater situation can sustain only 12,300 acres of cane cultivation, he said. But the area has about 10 times that much land under cultivation.

Repeated droughts have pushed tens of thousands of farmers to leave their villages to look for work in India’s overburdened cities and towns.

In Matola village, about 500 people, mostly men, have left in just the past six months. Many of the women and children left behind are selling their cattle in distress.

“There is no water in the sky or under the earth; there is nothing left here,” said Bai Gidappa Pawar, as she poured freshly ground chili powder into a jar in her kitchen. In December, her husband left for Pune city with their 16-year old son to work in a quarry. “There is not a single family here that does not have a loan hanging over its head.”

The burden of drought-induced loans is fueling farmer suicides across India. There were 12,360 suicides by land-owning farmers and farm laborers across India in 2014, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, up from 11,772 the previous year.

Since January, 43 farmers have killed themselves in Latur district alone, including Suryavanshi’s mother.

His mother was driven to take her life after the family lost more than $4,400 because of bad harvests in the sugar cane and soy bean crop in the past three years. He was unable to pay the hospital bills to treat his father’s cancer, who died three years ago. To feed his family, Suryavanshi and his brother now load boulders on to a truck for eight hours in the sun, earning less than $3 a day to feed their children.

His farm is barren now. The oppressive heat of the sun beat down on him, as he said he cannot afford to feed his buffalo for long.

He said his mother did farm labor for others and brought home extra money. That helped.

He feels her absence keenly.

“In spite of all the problems, my mother’s presence was like an umbrella protecting me from the harsh sun,” he said.  Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com

Siftery, A Database Of What Services Companies Are Using, Raises $4M

When companies have to pick what kinds of services they want for their operation — like marketing or human resources — they can easily be paralyzed by choice.

That’s why Vamshi Mokshagundam and Ayan Barua decided to start Siftery, a database of sorts where companies list their software stacks. The company just raised $4 million from Felicis Ventures, Founders Fund, and Venrock among others.

The hope is that as more companies share what services they use, Siftery will be able to recommend the best service they should use for a particular scenario. Siftery compares companies with similar stacks and looks for differences to make some recommendations. For instance, if two companies are using the same four services, but a second one is using a different one for marketing, Siftery may recommend that to the first company.

“There’s 30 different marketing solutions out there, you have to figure out what one or two products work, the graph does that for you,” Mokshagundam said. “Airbnb using this cool customer engagement product that people might not know about. This is a product you want to discover, you want to say hey this looks cool, I want to use it. Active selection is one point. But there’s this passive discovery part where the graph can surface interesting products you don’t know about.”

Siftery came about after Mokshagundam’s previous company had its own issues figuring out what services to use. The company had 15 people, but it employed more than 60 services, he said. That can not only get out of hand, but easily become very expensive — especially when companies don’t know that they can get discounts or are using services they don’t even need.

Traditionally, in order to determine what services other companies are using, individuals or companies would basically have to ask around, Mokshagundam said. Siftery, here, also has an advantage because it can upfront negotiate for discounts on services — which they already often offer — that it can then serve back to its members. That, too, helps offer Siftery a pathway to revenue, Mokshagundam said. Techcrunch.com/2016/02/02/siftery-a-database-of-what-services-companies-are-using-raises-4m/

Tech company which maintained Hillary's secret server was sued for 'illegally accessing' database and 'stealing White House military advisers' phone numbers'

The Internet company used by Hillary Clinton to maintain her private server was sued for stealing dozens of phone lines including some which were used by the White House.

Platte River Networks is said to have illegally accessed the master database for all US phone numbers.

It also seized 390 lines in a move that created chaos across the US government.

Among the phone numbers which the company took - which all suddenly stopped working - were lines for White House military support desks, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, a lawsuit claims.

Others were the main numbers for major financial institutions, hospitals and the help desk number for T2 Communications, the telecom firm which owned them.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of T2 claims that the mess took 11 days to fix and demands that Platte River pay up $360,000 in compensation. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3197093/Tech-company-maintained-Hillary-s-secret-server-sued-illegally-accessing-databases-creating-chaos-stealing-White-House-phone-numbers.html

Planned Parenthood claims database, website hacked by anti-abortion ‘extremists’

Planned Parenthood Federation of America says that its website had been hacked on Sunday by a group of “extremists” opposed to its agenda, who it said had enlisted some of the world’s foremost hackers for the job.

The hackers were able to penetrate into Planned Parenthood website databases, and have released names and email addresses of employees of the abortion provider. The hackers have reportedly said they have plans to decrypt and release internal Planned Parenthood emails soon as well.

“Today Planned Parenthood has notified the Department of Justice and separately the FBI that extremists who oppose Planned Parenthood’s mission and services have launched an attack on our information systems and have called on the world’s most sophisticated hackers to assist them in breaching our systems and threatening the privacy and safety of our staff members,” a Monday statement from Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens said.

Laguens called the alleged hack a “new low” in a report from Politico, and said Planned Parenthood was working with “top leaders in this field to manage these attacks.”

“Planned Parenthood is the most trusted women’s health care provider in this country, and anti-abortion extremists are willing to do anything to stop women from accessing the reproductive health care they are seeking,” Laguens said. “Extremists have broken laws, harassed our doctors and patients, produced hack videos, and now are claiming to have committed a gross invasion of privacy — one that, if true, could potentially put our staff members at risk.” See more: https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/planned-parenthood-claims-database-website-hacked-by-anti-abortion-extremis

Amazon Makes Aurora Database Generally Available

Amazon Web Services has re-architected the widely used MySQL open source database system into a database optimized for use as a cloud service. Its Aurora database service, first announced in mid-November, is now generally available.

The relational database service, frequently used on websites and for mobile applications, sits at the heart of the Aurora relational system service. But Amazon has broken it down from a single system into its core parts and staged those parts as semi-autonomous operations that can expand or contract as needed on its cloud infrastructure.
Sponsor video, mouseover for sound

Aurora, for example, relies on Amazon's S3 storage for its ability to capture data at scale, preserve the data in the face of potential system failure, and keep it constantly available to a running production system. To do so, its spreads two copies of each customer's data set across three availability zones, making it, in effect, a data center unit with its own power and communications.
